How does a barber chair work exactly?
A barber chair includes a hydraulic cylinder under the seat that provides both height adjustment and tilt motion. The hydraulic cylinder works by using fluid pressure, which is why it’s also called hydrostatic pressure. When you press hard on the cushion of the chair, your weight causes fluid to be forced through small holes in an orifice plate – these tiny jets of fluid are what pushes up on the piston beneath you and lifts your body upwards. The more weight applied, the greater force it exerts back down on this piston rod – so chairs with higher weight capacities need to have bigger orifices in order to move heavy weights without producing too much stress.
My chair is not lifting up. Does anyone know how to fix barber chair hydraulics?
The hydraulic fluid in the chairs is usually sealed, meaning it cannot leak out. This is done through polymer seals of some kind. When they do break of wear out, it’s best to replace the seal rather than try and repair it because there are metal pieces splattered all over inside that can cause big problems if you don’t get them back in their proper positions. Most good technicians will be able to tell what the problem is.
If you are facing the problem in lifting your chair, you might be facing the oil deficit in the hydraulic pump. Bring the chair to its lowest position, unscrew the cover of the pump, unscrew the cap of the oil reservoir and add oil using the funnel till the indicated mark. Push the trill twice or thrice up and down, so the excess oil and any bubbles might escape from the reservoir through the loosely screwed opening. Put the cover on the hydraulic cylinder back and screw it as before.
